How to take a break at Christmas

The Christmas Holidays is a great time to give yourself a break from training. All year you have clock watched, rushing from this and that. Feeling guilty about not working out over Christmas is normal, you have worked hard all year to gain that fitness, but you will not lose it overnight.

Your relationship with exercise should not be built on guilt, this does not make for a healthy mindset, says Ella Byworth writing for the Metro. I agree with her, fitness culture has become a little about punishing yourself and pushing yourself to the limit, if you are not broken, did you even workout?

Take a break from this spiral over Christmas and free up time to spend with your family. It is all over so quickly. Admittedly all being at home together can drive us bananas, but that family time is so rare. You will remember sitting down with your family watching a Christmas movie for the umpteenth time or playing a board game with Grandad who cheats badly, unlikely you will remember the gym session.

Mollie a London based personal trainer and running coach suggested these ways to take a break at Christmas.

‘It may seem counter-intuitive to take time off over Christmas from your training. You have worked hard throughout the year and don’t want to lose any fitness.

But rest days are so very important. They give your body a chance to reset and recover.

Use the off time as a way to re-visit other hobbies or plan a few training cycles for the next year. Research races and competitions. Find the latest books and research studies.

Just because your body is taking a break doesn’t mean your mind has to.

You can still stay active over the holidays rather than sitting around the house watching TV. Start a new family tradition of a walk in the park or a family cycle.

Make it fun for all abilities – bring the kids along and just have fun rather than worrying about having training targets to hit.’
